REGULAR SEASON GAME REPORTS

AUG. 22 -- SIMON KENTON 33, COLLINS 14

Simon Kenton took a 20-0 lead in the first quarter and went on to defeat Collins, the defending Class 4A state champs, in a game that ended late because it was delayed by lightning at halftime. Five players scored touchdowns for the Pioneers, including offensive lineman David Sandlin. He recovered a fumble in the end zone after the ball was knocked out of SK running back Dillion Powell’s hands.

Powell did score on a 75-yard run late in the first quarter. He had 112 yards on 10 carries when he left the game in the second quarter with an ankle injury. Price Burge and Kyle Heflin also had rushing touchdowns for the Pioneers. The team’s other TD came on a 49-yard pass player from quarterback Cam Racke to wide receiver Logan Winkler.

AUG. 29 -- SIMON KENTON 64, HOLY CROSS 7

Simon Kenton had more than 400 yards of total offense and posted its highest point total in the 15 years that Jeff Marksberry has been head coach of the Pioneers. The team's
highest previous scoring total under Marksberry was a 63-21 win over Boone County in 2009.

Holy Cross scored the game’s first touchdown on a 4-yard pass from quarterback Hamilton Scott to receiver David Lampke late in the first quarter. But Simon Kenton dominated play the rest of the game and finished with a commanding 455-118 advantage in total yardage.

The Pioneers had 359 yards rushing with Price Burge picking up 94 yards on five carries and Kyle Heflin getting 75 on nine carries. Heflin and quarterback Cam Racke each had two rushing touchdowns. Racke also threw a pair of TD passes to Logan Winkler and Logan Scott.

SEPT. 5 -- SIMON KENTON 53, CONNER 6

Simon Kenton scored on six of its first seven offensive possessions and got another touchdown on an interception return by linebacker Chris Hicks to take a 47-6 halftime lead.

The Pioneers had 432 yards of total offense with 380 coming in the first half.  Sophomore quarterback Cameron Racke completed 12 of 17 passes for 231 yards and four touchdowns. Senior running back Kyle Heflin rushed for 95 yards on 10 carries and scored twice. Logan Winkler scored three times and ended up with a combined total of 267 yards in receiving (167), rushing (27) and returns (73).

Conner scored its only touchdown in the second quarter. After a 35-yard pass play and a face mask penalty put the ball on the 2-yard line, junior quarterback Kyler Padgett threw a pass to Michael Postel in the end zone.

SEPT. 12 -- SIMON KENTON 46, NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 13

Simon Kenton took a 30-0 lead in the first half and posted its fourth straight win by a margin of 19 points or more.

Sophomore quarterback Cameron Racke completed 16 of 20 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns. He also scored on runs of 11 and 21 yards for the Pioneers, who finished with 484 yards of offense. Logan Winkler caught six passes for 84 yards and two TDs. He also ran in a pair of two-point conversions to raise his season scoring total of 48 points.

NewCath sophomore quarterback Patrick Henschen passed for 111 yards and two TDs, but the Thoroughbreds were held to minus-33 yards rushing.

SEPT. 19 -- SIMON KENTON 46, COOPER 0

Simon Kenton dominated play on both sides of the ball, finishing with 515 total yards while limiting Cooper to 64.

Sophomore quarterback Cameron Racke completed 18 of 25 passes for 222 yards and three touchdowns for the Pioneers.
The team's leading rusher was junior Dillion Powell with 135 yards on 18 carries and three TDs. Logan Winkler caught
seven passes for 107 yards and two TDs. He also had 38 yards in kick returns for SK.

Cooper running back Jaden Jackson picked up 63 yards on eight carries, but the SK defense had six tackles for a loss and intercepted two passes.

SEPT. 26 -- SIMON KENTON 24, RYLE 17

Sophomore quarterback Cameron Racke threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Logan Winkler in the closing seconds to give Simon Kenton the victory in the first Class 6A district game for both teams.

Racke also had two rushing touchdowns for the 6-0 Pioneers. The team's leading rusher was junior Dillion Powell, who picked

up 116 yards on 26 carries. He also had 18 yards receiving and 22 yards in kick returns to account for 156 all-purpose yards.

Ryle finished with a 282-226 advantage in total offense. The Raiders' team leader was junior Mitchell Bateman, who rushed for 120 yards and one TD. Colin England picked up 96 yards on 16 carries.

Ryle scored on a blocked punt return by Gavin Brandt to take a 17-14 lead. But the Raiders turned the ball over late in the game when their punter's knee touched the ground trying to field a low snap. That gave Simon Kenton the ball at the Raiders' 14-yard line and set up the winning touchdown pass from Racke to Winkler.

OCT. 3 -- SIMON KENTON 45, CAMPBELL COUNTY 14

Simon Kenton senior Logan Winkler returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown and the Pioneers scored 35 unanswered points in the second half to win the Class 6A district game and remain undefeated on the season.

The Pioneers had a slim 10-7 lead when the second half started before junior running back Dillion Powell ignited the offense with a 76-yard touchdown run. By the end of the third quarter, Simon Kenton had opened up a 31-7 lead and capped off its scoring surge with touchdown runs by Powell and Kyle Heflin in the final period.

Powell ended up with 214 rushing yards. Sophomore quarterback Cameron Racke completed 14 of 20 passes for 152 yards. Winkler, who also caught a TD pass in the third quarter, had 146 all-purpose yards in receiving (41), rushing (17) and returns (88).

Campbell Copunty quarterback Carson Plessinger had 97 yards passing and 50 yards rushing. His 12-yard touchdown pass to Gabe Kremer tied the score at 7-7 in the second quarter. But one of Plessinger’s passes was intercepted and he had one of the team’s two fumbles.

OCT. 10 -- SIMON KENTON 27, BOONE COUNTY 21

Dillion Powell scored on a 4-yard run with 1:54 left on the clock to give Simon Kenton the victory in the Class 6A district game. It was the second TD of the game for Powell, who finished with 148 yards on 25 carries. Logan Winkler scored the Pioneers’ other two touchdowns on passes from quarterback Cameron Racke.

Boone County tied the score early in the fourth quarter when Ryan Vickers caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Jamar Lamb and Carlos Figueroa ran in the 2-point conversion. The Rebels also scored on a 1-yard run by Jerry Marshall in the first quarter and an 85-yard kickoff return by Aaron Floyd in the second quarter.

OCT. 17 -- DIXIE HEIGHTS 36, SIMON KENTON 10

Dixie Heights senior quarterback Drew Moore scored three times in the first half when the Colonels took a 22-3 lead and they went on to win the battle for first place in the Class 6A district.

Moore, who picked up 169 of his team’s 273 rushing yards, also threw a 27-yard TD pass to Luke Zajac in the third quarter to extend the lead to 29-3. Zajac also plays linebacker for the Colonels and scored again when he recovered a fumble and returned it 87 yards to the end zone. Simon Kenton got its only touchdown on a 4-yard run by Kyle Heflin with 1:43 left in the game.

Dixie Heights finished with 325 total yards compared to 236 for Simon Kenton. The team leaders for the Pioneers were quarterback Cam Racke, who completed 14 of 21 passes for 116 yards, and running back Dillion Powell, who had 95 yards on 27 carries.

OCT. 24 -- SIMON KENTON 42, BULLITT CENTRAL 7

Playing with borrowed equipment didn’t hamper the Simon Kenton offense that totaled 441 yards in the team’s final regular-season game.

A fire in the Simon Kenton fieldhouse ruined much of the football team’s equipment, but other teams in the area let the Pioneers borrow helmets and pads for the game. The SK players responded by taking a 23-0 lead in the first quarter and extending it to

36-0 by halftime.

The first three scoring plays were a 48-yard run by tailback Dillon Powell, a 31-yard run by quarterback Cameron Racke and a 3-yard run by halfback Kyle Heflin. In the second quarter, Racke threw TD pass to Cole Murray and Heflin.
