NOTE: For Class 6A playoffs, 5th place teams in Districts 3 and 4 in Louisville will be No. 4 seeds in local Districts 5 and 6 next season.
Northern Kentucky Football Coaches Association teams posted another successful high school season in 2014. Here's a look at some of the numbers that made it so special:
23 -- The Highlands Bluebirds won their 23rd state championship trophy in exciting fashion, scoring 28 unanswered points during the second half to defeat Owensboro, 49-42, in the Class 4A state final.
3 -- Three of our local teams -- Newport Central Catholic, Highlands and Dixie Heights -- played in state championship games. It was the first time Dixie Heights
made it to a state final and coach Dave Brossart was named NKFCA Coach of the Year.
5 -- Five of our local teams -- Beechwood, NewCath, Highlands, Cooper and Dixie Heights -- won regional championship games and advanced to the semifinal round of the state playoffs in their respective classes.
100 -- Simon Kenton posted its 100th victory under head coach Jeff Marksberry, who took charge of the Pioneers' program in 2000. That makes him the winningest active coach in Northern Kentucky.

By the numbers
2014 was exceptional season
for NKFCA high school teams
3,428 rushing and passing yards this season, which was more than half of the 5,914 total yards recorded by the Colonels.
366 -- Highlands senior quarterback Beau Hoge had a combined total of 61 rushing and passing touchdowns this season for 366 points, which was more than half of of the 611 points scored by the Bluebirds.
95 for 1,595 -- Highlands wide receiver Alex Veneman led the state in pass receptions (95) and receiving yards (1,595). He also set Northern Kentucky single-season records with both of those numbers.
19 -- Bellevue senior Alec Hazeres set a new state record in career fumble recoveries. He had eight this season to give him a career total of 19.
