2014 Schedule

AUG. 23 -- MASON COUNTY 32, NEWPORT 28

Mason County scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to come from behind and beat Newport, 32-28, in a game that was postponed on Friday night due to bad weather and resumed on Saturday.

Newport took a 28-19 lead in the third quarter when senior quarterback Paul Price capped off a 56-yard drive with a 15-yard run into the end zone. But Mason County rallied in the fourth quarter and scored the winning touchdown on a quarterback sneak by senior Bradley Boone with 17 seconds left to play.

The Newport offense had 329 total yards, but the Wildcats were penalized 15 times for 116 yards. Price completed 12 of 21 passes for 160 yards and had two rushing touchdowns. He also connected with senior Brian Burton on a 46-yard TD pass.

AUG. 29 -- NEWPORT 36, WALTON-VERONA 26

Newport senior Brian Burton returned the opening kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown and made several other plays that helped the Wildcats come away with the victory.

Burton also caught a TD pass and came up with two interceptions on defense. He picked off both of those passes late in the fourth quarter when Walton-Verona was trying to make a late comeback.

Tyree Bolden also scored twice for the Wildcats and Dominic Joseph had 111 rushing yards on 16 carries.

SEPT. 12 -- SCOTT 31, NEWPORT 14

After putting together a 95-yard touchdown drive on its second possession, Newport wasn’t able to move the ball effectively until the final seconds and Scott came away with the win.

Newport quarterback Paul Price threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Brian Burton on the final play of the team’s 95-yard scoring drive to give the Wildcats a 6-0 lead. Scott responded with a 59-yard scoring drive of its own. Senior running back Eli Sowder scored the touchdown on a 22-yard run and Logan Lawson kicked the extra point to put the Eagles ahead, 7-6.

In the second quarter, Scott extended its lead to 19-6 by scoring one touchdown following a blocked punt and another on a fumble return by defensive lineman Eli Humbert.

A 43-yard touchdown run by junior Deondre Pleasant gave Scott a 25-7 lead in the third quarter. The Eagles scored again in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard run by junior Jerry Berling to make it 31-7. Newport scored in the final seconds when Ryan Ochoa caught a 35-yard TD pass from Price.

SEPT. 19 --  WILLIAMSBURG 31, NEWPORT 22

In the fourth quarter, Newport running back Dominic Joseph scored his second touchdown of the game on a 4-yard run and ran in the 2-point conversion to cut Williamsburg’s lead to 25-22. But Williamsburg put together one last scoring drive to clinch the win and improve to 5-0. Newport quarterback Paul Price rushed for 108 yards and one touchdown. He also threw a 13-yard scoring pass to Joseph.

SEPT. 26 -- NEWPORT 62, PENDLETON COUNTY 13

Newport snapped a two-game losing streak behind the play of senior quarterback Paul Price, who engineered seven scoring drives in the first half when the Wildcats took a 56-7 lead. Price rushed for 111 yards and one touchdown and threw a pair of

It was the first shutout of the season for the Newport defense and the first time that Brossart was unable to score against an opponent this year. The Mustangs have been reduced to a 19-player roster that includes freshmen.

OCT. 10 -- NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 22, NEWPORT 17

Both teams ran the ball well in the rain with NewCath coming out on top to retain first place in the Class 2A district standings.

Newport quarterback Paul Price had 100 yards on 19 carries in addition to throwing a 24-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Ochoa. That score cut NewCath’s lead to 22-17 with less than four minutes left in the game. The Wildcats got the ball back one more time, but they turned it over after coming up short on a fourth-down play.

OCT. 17 -- NEWPORT 51, HOLY CROSS 6

Newport's explosive offensive attack compiled 424 total yards (309 rushing, 115 passing) in the Class 2A district win. The Wildcats’ leading rusher was Tyree Bolden, who had 132 yards on 5 carries. Lloyd sophomore running back Justin Durham scored two rushing touchdowns for the Juggernauts, who were unable to keep up with Newport’s high-scoring offense.

OCT. 31 -- NEWPORT 38, HOLMES 14

After turning the ball over on a fumble in the opening minutes, Newport got its offense in gear and scored touchdowns on four of its next five possessions. Senior quarterback Paul Price got the Wildcats’ first two touchdowns on runs of 6 and 51 yards. In the final seconds of the first quarter, Newport scored again when senior linebacker Dominic Joseph scooped up a Holmes fumble and took it 31 yards into the end zone.

Joseph, who also plays fullback for Newport, scored his second TD on a 15-yard run with 9:00 remaining in the second quarter. The next time Newport got the ball Gage Jones crossed the goal line on a 3-yard run that made it 31-0 at halftime.

Officials instituted a running clock after a 1-yard TD run by senior David Lynam gave the Wildcats a 38-0 lead with 7:25 left in the third quarter.
At that point, the Holmes offense had negative yardage and no first downs. But the Bulldogs avoided a shutout when sophomore Salih Abdullah scored on breakaway runs of 89 and 80 yards in the fourth quarter.
