AUG. 22 -- HOLMES 21, HOLY CROSS 7
Holmes junior running back Delijah Ross-Tyus scored on two long touchdown runs in the fourth quarter to give his team the win. Ross-Tyus broke a 7-7 tie with a 59-yard TD run early in the final period. His 42-yard scoring run with 2:34 remaining sealed the season-opening victory for the Bulldogs.
Ross-Tyus finished with nine carries for 145 yards. Holmes junior quarterback Desean Brumfield completed 10 of 17 passes for 129 yards. The offensive leader for Holy Cross was senior quarterback Hamilton Scott, who had 107 yards passing and 101 rushing for the Indians.
AUG. 29 -- SCOTT 34, HOLMES 7
Scott scored on its first two offensive possessions with seniors Roberto London and Deondre Pleasant breaking free on touchdown runs of 42 and 51 yards, respectively. Both of them also scored on big plays later in game. Pleasant returned a punt 71 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter and London had a 56-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.
Holmes opened the second half with an 86-yard drive that ended with tailback Delijah Ross-Tyus scoring on a 10-yard run. But the Bulldogs didn’t get much done on offense after that and finished with 238 total yards compared to 346 for the Eagles.
SEPT. 5 -- LLOYD 42, HOLMES 18
Lloyd sophomore Leshunn Townsend rushed for 134 yards, caught a 71-yard touchdown pass and scored again on a 73-yard kickoff return.
Both quarterbacks also had good games. Hayden Molitor of Lloyd had one touchdown rushing and two passing while Desean Brumfield of Holmes completed 17 of 37 passes for 356 yards and two touchdowns.
SEPT. 12 -- WALTON-VERONA 28, HOLMES 13
Holmes took a 13-7 lead in the second quarter on a 3-yard touchdown run by Andrew Arnold, but Walton-Verona scored 21 unanswered points to get the win.
Holmes junior Desean Brumfield scored the game’s first touchdown on a 4-yard run, but the Bulldogs defense wasn’t able to stop Walton-Verona’s rushing attack. The Bearcats finished with 379 yards rushing, including touchdown runs of 62 and 91 yards.
SEPT. 26 -- BEECHWOOD 49, HOLMES 7
Six players scored for Beechwood, including defensive back Jake Cottingham on a 32-yard interception return in the first half when the Tigers took a 35-0 lead. The team's leading rusher was junior Ethan Stringer with 89 yards on six carries. Junior quarterback Kyle Fieger completed six of nine passes for 110 yards and one TD.
Beechwood had 376 total yards while holding Holmes to 211. The Bulldogs' only touchdown came early in the fourth quarter on a 63-yard pass from quarterback Raekwon Sterling to wide receiver Fredrick Vickers, who had four receptions for 136 yards.
OCT. 3 -- BELLEVUE 32, HOLMES 22
Senior quarterback Tate Grainger threw three touchdown passes in the second quarter to give Bellevue a 26-14 halftime lead and the Tigers went on to claim a victory against their Class 4A opponent.
Grainger completed 18 of 24 passes for 244 yards and four touchdowns in the game. He’s one of the leading passers in the state with 1,721 yards and 20 touchdowns in seven games. Blake Stephenson caught two of the second-quarter TD passes for the Tigers. Cameron Chase also scored twice, one on a 4-yard pass from Grainger and another on a 6-yard run.
Holmes running back Delijah Ross-Tyus scored the game’s first touchdown on a 23-yard run and the Bulldogs took a 14-6 lead in the second quarter on a 43-yard pass from quarterback Desean Brumfield to tight end Andrew Arnold. But the Bulldogs weren’t able to score again until the fourth quarter.
OCT. 10 -- HOLMES 12, HARRISON COUNTY 6
Harrison County returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, but Holmes scored on 5-yard runs by Desean Brumfield and Andrew Arnold in the second and third quarters to come away with the Class 4A district victory and snap a five-game losing streak.
OCT. 17 -- HIGHLANDS 36, HOLMES 0
Highlands did all of its scoring in the first half and clinched the Class 4A district title with the win. The Bluebirds’ defense also played well, allowing 126 total yards and posting its first shutout of the season.
Highlands quarterback Beau Hoge scored on a 5-yard run and completed 9 of 19 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns. Both of Hoge's touchdown passes went to wide receiver Alex Veneman, who had a big night compiling 119 yards on 6 catches. James Grau had two rushing touchdowns for the Bluebirds.
Holmes was limited to 79 yards rushing and 47 yards passing. Austin Beal had a pass interception for the Bluebirds.
OCT. 24 -- COVINGTON CATHOLIC 38, HOLMES 0
CovCath took a 30-0 lead in the first half and coasted to victory in a game that decided second place in the Class 4A district.
Senior quarterback Adam Wagner returned to action after sitting out three games with an injury and threw touchdown passes to three receivers. His twin brother, Alex, scored CovCath’s other two TDs on runs of 30 and 15 yards.
OCT. 31 -- NEWPORT 38, HOLMES 14
After turning the ball over on a fumble in the opening minutes, Newport got its offense in gear and scored touchdowns on four of its next five possessions. Senior quarterback Paul Price got the Wildcats’ first two touchdowns on runs of 6 and 51 yards. In the final seconds of the first quarter, Newport scored again when senior linebacker Dominic Joseph scooped up a Holmes fumble and took it 31 yards into the end zone.
Joseph, who also plays fullback for Newport, scored his second TD on a 15-yard run with 9:00 remaining in the second quarter. The next time Newport got the ball Gage Jones crossed the goal line on a 3-yard run that made it 31-0 at halftime.
Officials instituted a running clock after a 1-yard TD run by senior David Lynam gave the Wildcats a 38-0 lead with 7:25 left in the third quarter. At that point, the Holmes offense had negative yardage and no first downs. But the Bulldogs avoided a shutout when sophomore Salih Abdullah scored on breakaway runs of 89 and 80 yards in the fourth quarter.
