REGULAR SEASON GAME REPORTS

AUG. 30 -- MOUNT HEALTHY 40, BEECHWOOD 34

 

After falling behind 21-0 in the first half, Beechwood made a strong comeback behind the passing of junior quarterback Kyle Fieger in the team’s season opener.

In the second half, Fieger threw five touchdown passes with senior running back Joe Studer on the receiving end for
three of them. On the Tigers’ last possession, Grant Plageman caught a 5-yard TD pass and Mario German kicked the extra-point to cut Mount Healthy’s lead to 40-34 with 36 seconds left on the clock. Beechwood attempted an onside kick, but was unable to recover the ball.

Beechwood finished with a 410-388 advantage in total yards. Fieger completed 20 of 41 passes for 305 yards. Studer had five receptions for 116 yards and senior wide receiver Jeremy Burns caught five passes for 102 yards. 

SEPT. 5 -- DIXIE HEIGHTS 48, BEECHWOOD 21

Senior quarterback Drew Moore had a combined total of 220 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead Dixie Heights to the victory. He rushed for 97 yards on 14 carries and completed five of 11 passes for 123 yards.

Moore nearly outgained the entire Beechwood’s team, which had 144 yards passing and 84 rushing for a 228 total. Joe Studer scored on a 1-yard run and 33-yard pass reception for the Tigers.

Luke Zajac also had a big game for the Colonels with 214 all-purpose yards (108 rushing, 106 returns). The Dixie Heights defense had three quarterback sacks and forced Beechwood to punt or turn the ball over on downs on six possessions.

SEPT. 12 -- BEECHWOOD 58, HOLY CROSS 0

Beechwood posted its first win of the season with an impressive offensive performance that netted 354 yards and nine touchdowns while its defense held Holy Cross to 52 yards.

 

Ethan Stringer had three rushing touchdowns for the Tigers. Joe Studer scored on a 3-yard run and caught a 7-yard TD pass from quarterback Kyle Fieger.

 

SEPT. 19 -- BEECHWOOD 42, FRANKLIN COUNTY 13

Junior quarterback Kyle Fieger completed 15 of 20 passes for 237 yards and three touchdowns to lead Beechwood to the victory.

Three Beechwood players – Joe Studer, Ethan Stringer and Jonathan Stokes – caught a touchdown pass and scored another TD on a rushing play.  Studer was the Tigers’  leading rusher with 151 yards on 15 carries.

SEPT. 26 -- BEECHWOOD 49, HOLMES 7

Six players scored for Beechwood, including defensive back Jake Cottingham on a 32-yard interception return in the first half when the Tigers took a 35-0 lead. The team's leading rusher was junior Ethan Stringer with 89 yards on six carries. Junior quarterback Kyle Fieger completed six of nine passes for 110 yards and one TD.  

Beechwood had 376 total yards while holding Holmes to 211. The Bulldogs' only touchdown came early in the fourth quarter on a 63-yard pass from quarterback Raekwon Sterling to wide receiver Fredrick Vickers, who had four receptions for 136 yards.

 

 

 

OCT. 4 -- BEECHWOOD 28 COVINGTON CATHOLIC 13

Beechwood junior Brett Slusher scored three consecutive touchdowns in the second and third quarters to provide the spark the Tigers needed to beat CovCath for the first time since 2008.

Slusher started his scoring streak with an 88-yard kickoff return in the second quarter. His other two touchdowns came on a 77-yard pass play in the second quarter and a 35-yard pass play in the third quarter that gave Beechwood a 28-6 lead. Senior running back Joe Studer threw the first TD pass to Slusher on an option play and quarterback Kyle Fieger threw the second one. Fieger also connected with Jonathan Stokes on a 12-yard pass for the game's first touchdown.

 

CovCath finished with a 378-328 advantage in total yardage, but junior quarterback Ben Dressman had two passes intercepted and the Colonels turned the ball over on downs deep inside Beechwood territory twice in the second half. Junior receiver Ryan McGinness scored both of CovCath's touchdowns on a 5-yard pass from Dressman and a 49-yard run.

OCT. 10 -- BEECHWOOD 41, BELLEVUE 18
 

Beechwood took a 28-0 lead in the first quarter and rolled to an easy win in the Class 1A district game. Ethan Stringer rushed for 149 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Beechwood offense while the defense held Bellevue scoreless until late in the third quarter.
 

The game was played in a steady rain that hampered Bellevue’s ability to run its passing offense. Senior quarterback Tate Grainger completed only two of 10 passes. One of his errant passes was intercepted by Beechwood junior lineman Justin Overstreet, who returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. Bellevue did rush for more than 200 yards, including touchdown runs of 57 and 16 yards by Cameron Chase.   

OCT. 17 -- BEECHWOOD 62, DAYTON 0

Beechwood put the Class A district game away early as it scored 34 points in the first quarter and went on to post 325 yards of total offense. Meanwhile, the Tigers’ defense forced five turnovers and held Dayton to just 47 yards.

Beechwood scored two of its first-quarter touchdowns on interception returns by linebacker Brett Slusher and defensive back Jack Cottingham. Running back Ethan Stringer also scored twice during that period and finished with 83 rushing yards on seven carries for an 11.9 average. Junior quarterback Kyle Fieger completed 6 of 8 passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns.

 

OCT. 24 -- BEECHWOOD 41, LUDLOW 7

Beechwood scored six touchdowns in the first half and rolled up 378 yards in the win to clinch first place in the Class 1A district for the eighth consecutive year. The Tigers’ leading scorer was Ethan Stringer, who had one receiving and two rushing touchdowns. Junior quarterback Kyle Fieger got most of his 145 passing yards on a 78-yard scoring pass Brett Slusher.

Beechwood’s defense held Ludlow to 54 yards of total offense. Justin Blackburn scored Ludlow’s only touchdown on a 2-yard run in the third quarter.


 

OCT. 31 -- BEECHWOOD 30, NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 13 

Junior running back Ethan Stringer rushed for 178 yards and two touchdowns and junior quarterback Kyle Fieger threw a pair of TD pass to Jonathan Stokes in the Tigers’ victory. NewCath scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to pull within 20-13, but the Beechwood defense stepped up in the second half.

NewCath junior running back Jacob Smith had 158 rushing yards and scored on a 46-yard screen pass from Patrick Henschen. The team’s other TD came in a 16-yard run by Clint Bartels. 


Fieger completed 10 of 19 passes for 241 yards to finish the regular season with 1,663 total passing yards.
